A Lusan Mandongus Gown For a Travel Inspired Wedding By The Sea

Newton Hall Wedding

Morning all, did you catch our late afternoon wedding yesterday, it was full of cornflower blue pretty and had the most lust-worthy gold sparkly wedding shoes?  This morning, I’m sharing the nuptials of Rachel and Ewen, who tied the knot on 2nd June this year at Newton Hall, Newton by the Sea – a beautiful wedding venue in Northumberland, the interior for which was styled, and the venue inaugurated as a wedding venue, by my friend Julie Chambers, whose amazing wedding features here on Love My Dress.

These photographs, sent in by two of our favorite photographers, The Twins, show Rachel in her elegant  Lusan Mandongus gown, that she purchased from ‘The White Closet’ in West Didsbury…

“I had a clear idea of what kind of dress I wanted. I knew that I didn’t want a strapless or a large structured dress. I went to three bridal shops but eventually found ‘the one’ in The White Closet. After walking past the shop window for years, I wasted no time in booking an appointment.  The dress didn’t immediately jump out at me but as soon as I
tried it on I knew it was perfect. I felt elegant but more importantly I felt like myself. I loved the lace, the neck line and especially the back detail.”

We met in a bar over 6 years ago and spent the rest of the evening
chatting away. We talked about travelling and it turned out we both
wanted to do the Trans-Siberian.  Six months later and the train tickets
were booked. We were engaged for six months as we decided that we
wanted a short engagement. Ewen proposed at the top of a mountain in
Torridon and presented me with a thistle as a ring.”

“As soon as we were engaged we decided we had to get married in
Northumberland. I’d grown up in the North East, we’ve spent a lot of
time there together and it’s such a beautiful part of the world. We
wanted to share it with all our friends and family who’d never been
there before.

They got such a surprise!! Newton Hall was the very first and the only venue we looked at. I couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else now!”

Rachel’s gorgeous headpiece was from Flo and Percy

“As a Primary School teacher, I love nothing more than cutting
and sticking! It’s also a bonus that we have a huge stock cupboard at
work full of Arts materials!  I loved making our own invitations which
were OS map hearts of our wedding venue. Our table plan was a world map
and each table was named after our favourite places we’ve been together.
Carrying on the travel theme, place cards were luggage tags.  We
collected vases from charity shops and decorated jam jars with hessian
and ribbon.

The reception room was so beautiful it
didn’t really need dressing. We didn’t want to cover the tables as they
were beautiful rustic farmhouse tables so I guess our wedding ended up
having  a rustic theme. We used a LOVE sign, vases and jam jars of
flowers to decorate the fireplace. We also had a props table with a
suitcase for cards and photos of family members. Ewen’s mum past away a
few years ago and my brother in New Zealand also had an accident the
week before the wedding and couldn’t be with us. It was lovely to have
their photos on display on our wedding day.”

“My bridesmaids dresses were from Emily and Finn.  I love patterned dresses, especially floral – and really didn’t want formal bridesmaid dresses.”

“We used Triangle Nursery
for flowers, who we discovered via Love My Dress.  We both wanted a very natural look with the flowers, as
if they’d just been picked from a meadow. I don’t have any experience of
flower arranging but Mary from Triangle Nursery was fantastic and
advised me on exactly what I needed after sending her photos. Arranging
the flowers in vases with my bridesmaids the day before the wedding was
one of the most therapeutic things I’ve ever done!

Bouquets and button holes were supplied by Simply Flowers of Alnwick.”

“My Dad walked me down the aisle to the sound of Elbow’s ‘One
Day Like This’ and walked out to ‘Take over the World’ by The
Courteeners. They are both bands that we love and have seen a number of
times.

We had ‘Grow Old With You’ by Adam
Sandler as it’s one of our favourite films. Our second reading was
‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ which I think is very beautiful.”

“Ewen’s ring was from the jeweller Christopher Wren and mine is an
Ungar and Ungar ring. I don’t have an engagement ring so I wanted to
take advantage of the fact that my wedding band could be more unusual.
After looking high and low, as soon as I saw it in the shop window I
loved it. It’s so intricate and beautiful.”

“We danced to ‘There is a Light that Will Never Go Out’ by The
Smiths. They’re my favourite band and there’s not a more romantic line
in a song than ‘If a double decker bus crashes into us, to die by your
side would be a heavenly way to die!’  Our friends and family got into
the spirit and clapped along and joined in with the chorus.

We were very keen to have a ceilidh as they’re fantastic in getting everyone up to dance, both young and old, so after our first dance, The Monster Celidh Band played for everyone.

Words of Wedded Wisdom

“I really enjoyed adding and making the personal touches but I’d recommend
giving yourself plenty of time beforehand.  Having the chance to mingle
with the guests the night before in the pub meant I was more relaxed on
the wedding day and it also meant we didn’t feel pressured or worried
about making sure we spoke to everyone on the wedding day.

We were also lucky in that we were surrounded by such fantastic people all weekend-
Carolyn (the hairdresser), the staff at the Venue and
Kelly and Caroline
(our photographers) were so relaxed and lovely to have around on the
day.  We wanted our day to be as relaxed as possible and for our guests
to enjoy themselves. It’s so true that nobody notices things that don’t
go to plan and once your day comes you won’t either!

I enjoyed every second from arranging the flowers with my
bridesmaids, mingling in the pub the night before, laughing our way
through the ceremony as we fluffed our lines, the cocktails, amazing
speeches,  having our photos taken on the beach, dancing to the ceilidh
and staying up until 5am in the late night bar!”
