Glamorous, Elegant, Alternative Bridal Style

City Chic Style 0016

Here at Love My Dress® HQ, we’re lusting over the current bridal penchant to try something a little different – from super-sharp separates to romantic frocks with shorter skirt lengths and beautiful dramatic gowns drenched in colour.

When I’m not penning articles for Love My Dress®, I’m also the International Contributing Editor at OliviaPalermo.com and when our very own ed-in-chief got hitched to long-time love Johannes this month, we, along with the rest of the style set, eagerly awaited a glimpse at the top-secret bridal look! In custom Carolina Herrera, our Olivia looked every inch the beautiful bride.

After seeing Olivia’s chic separates and reviewing the latest couture looks, we can’t help but notice a spate of wedding-ready ideas and silhouettes that have, frankly, gotten our hearts a little a flutter. Here are our top tips for alternative bridal style, this coming season.

City Chic Separates

Olivia opted for a Herrera combination of cashmere sweater, shorts and a full tulle skirt overlay, cinched at the waist in layers of satin and silk with floral details along the hem. The style icon accessorised this with a bracelet bought on a recent trip to Jodhpur, natural make-up and an unfussy ponytail.

“I wanted the makeup to be light and fresh and more focused about the lashes while keeping the eyes clean. My hair was in an uncontrived Pony Tail, one of my favorite personal looks”, commented Olivia to her site’s avid readers.

The new Mrs Huebl isn’t alone on her quest for bridal style a little different to the norm – from the pages of Love My Dress® to the latest in haute couture, aisles and catwalks alike have been awash with refreshing looks. From slim skirts to practical shorter lengths and tailored pieces, we adore this sharp look, perfect for city weddings or the bride looking for something super-stylish.

Splash of Colour

A few years back we lusted over Sofia Coppola’s lilac chiffon wedding dress – perfect against the backdrop of her Southern Italy nuptials. Wedding blogs and of course Love My Dress have featured many a coloured gown recently, not least the emerald vintage Dior worn by Lucy as she wed Oliver in Northumberland.

If the traditional white isn’t you, take a peek at our inspiration – from red to yellow and dramatic tones of black and grey. Recent catwalk shows presented an array of red hues – we adore Armani Prive’s organic layers and Elie Saab’s full gown, belted at the waist with romantic embroidery.

Ankle-Grazing Lengths

A certain Keira Knightley’s cemented the trend for shorter lengths when she wed her Klaxons beau. Her frock was in fact a Chanel cocktail dress worn previously on the red carpet but teamed with a bolero jacket that looked perfect for her French nuptials.

This summer, Fearne Cotton stunned in her Emilio Pucci gown, cut just above the ankle – faultless in showing off those sparkly strappy sandals! We’ve also enjoyed a number of weddings on LMD this summer in this shorter length – looking great at vintage inspired days.

The recent couture shows also unveiled ankle-grazing lengths with stunning floral examples spotted at Giambatista Valli and straight-skirted with intricate embroidery at Chanel.

  1. Very good timing – I emailed you yesterday about my struggle to find a coloured dress! 🙂 love the Elie Saab ones, if only I had the money. Still hunting for a yellow lace dress, or someone to make me one! If anyone reading this has any idea, please let me know! x
