As someone who was the archetypal tomboy at school, it’s somewhat ironic that I have ended up in the wedding industry, living a life that’s packed with pretty. Happily, despite my childhood refusal to wear anything but jeans, I fall more in love with dresses every day and when the images of Melanie Potro’s latest collection arrived in my inbox, my heart beat a little faster.  The elegant simplicity of these delightful gowns really is something special and so I’m all a-tingle to be able to share them with you today.

The inspiration for Melanie’s work comes from her childhood love of movies from the golden days of Hollywood and the gowns that were created for Ginger Rogers, Greta Garbo and Grace Kelly. Her bridal gowns echo this easy, glamorous mood and the result is an unfussy feminine look that is perfect if you’d like to glide up the aisle in an elegant, yet simply seductive, dress.

Part of what makes these designs so special is what’s going on underneath them, as one of Melanie’s specialties is corsetry. Now, when I say that word, please don’t imagine old-school corsets that left you unable to breath, move or even maintain blood supply to your legs. Oh no, Melanie’s corsets are supple, supportive and flattering beyond words. If I tell you that Melanie used to create costumes for the Bolshoi Ballet and English Nation Opera then you can rid yourself of all notions of discomfort and embrace the comfort and curves that these amazing corsets provide.

Another hallmark of Melanie’s work that ensures you will look and feel amazing on your wedding day is the fact that whether you’re choosing a design from the current collection or you’ve opted for a bespoke gown, your dress will be made to measure, just for you. Once your measurements have been taken, a ‘toile’ (a dress made from cotton calico) will be made for you to try and only when this fits perfectly will work begin on your actual dress.

Melanie PotroAnd as for the collection itself, there’s just so much to love. The fit-and-flare beauty of Annabelle with that charming deep v-neckline and crystal detailing and the delightful tailoring and peplum accents, cap sleeves and button accents that you can see on Lena are so fitting for any location. Other favourites include the flirty skirt of Grace (which echoes those iconic 50s looks when teamed with Melanie’s lace bolero) and the Great Gatsby inspired elegance of Daisy with the chiffon belt and rose corsage bringing the look together beautifully. Oh, and how could we not mention the divine Alana, with long lace sleeves and a sublime draped chiffon skirt.

“I’ve been making made to measure bridal wear for ten years,” says Melanie. “I love my work and love providing a high-end service to brides for their very special day. I want everyone I work with to look and feel a million dollars.”
